What Is a Split System?
The split system is the most common air conditioner in Adelaide homes, and for good reason: it heats and cools a single room or open-plan area efficiently, without the cost or disruption of ducting an entire house.
A split system consists of two connected units: an indoor unit, mounted on a wall or ceiling, and an outdoor unit housing the compressor and condenser. The two are linked by refrigerant piping and electrical wiring — no ductwork required. Because everything happens between just two units, split systems are relatively fast to install and condition only the space you actually need conditioned.
Split System vs Reverse Cycle — What's the Difference?
This trips a lot of people up, so it's worth being direct about it: "split system" and "reverse cycle" aren't two different products, they're two different descriptions of the same unit. Split system describes the form factor — indoor unit plus outdoor unit. Reverse cycle describes the function — the system can run in reverse to provide heating as well as cooling, rather than cooling only.
The overwhelming majority of split systems sold and installed in Australia today are reverse cycle as standard. So when you're comparing quotes for "a split system" and "a reverse cycle air conditioner" for a single room, in practice you're very likely comparing the same thing.
